Your Domain, Explained

A quick guide for our clients

Your domain name, in plain English

Your domain is the address people type to find you, like yourbusiness.com. Here’s how it works with your new site, and why it’s always yours.

Our promise

You own your domain, always. It stays in your name, in your account.

We handle the technical setup so your site loads at your address, but the domain itself belongs to you. You can see it, control it, and take it anywhere. We only ever get permission to manage the settings, and you can remove that access whenever you like.

Two simple situations

Setting up your address comes down to one of these, and we’ll guide you through whichever fits:

You already have a domain

Great. We simply connect it to your new site. In most cases your email and everything else keep working, untouched. We’ll either send you a couple of settings to paste in, or make the change for you with your permission. We never need your password.

You need a domain

We’ll help you pick a great one and register it in your own account, with your card, so it’s yours from day one. No middleman, no strings. You’ll always be the owner on record.

What we’ll need from you

Just a few quick answers get us started, and no technical knowledge is required:

  • Your domain name, if you have one The exact web address, spelled out
  • Where it’s registered, if you know Like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace. A rough idea is fine
  • Whether you use email at that address Such as you@yourbusiness.com, so we keep it working

Not sure of some of these? No problem at all. That’s exactly what we’re here to sort out. Just tell us what you know and we’ll figure out the rest together.

What to expect when we go live

When it’s time to launch your site at your domain, here’s how it goes:

1

We point your address to the new site

A small settings change tells your domain where your new website lives.

2

It spreads across the internet

This can take anywhere from a few minutes to about a day. That’s normal, and nothing’s broken while it happens.

3

Your site goes secure

We set up the padlock (the little lock in the address bar) so visitors know your site is safe.

4

We test everything, then hand it over

We check your site loads, your email still works, and everything’s in order before we call it live.

One thing to keep in mind

A domain is like a subscription that renews each year. We’ll make sure auto-renew is switched on in your account so your address never lapses, and we’ll note your renewal date. As long as that’s on, your site stays reachable and there’s nothing more you need to do.

Questions? We’ve got you.

Domains can sound intimidating, but you don’t have to understand any of the technical bits. That’s our job. Ask us anything and we’ll walk you through it in plain language.
